Uzbekistan Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power Market: Outlook 2020 - 2030 - Trends, Forecasts, Investments, Opportunities, Analysis, COVID-19 Impact
/23rd December 2020, RENEWABLE MARKET WATCHTM/ This market report offers an incisive and reliable long-term overview of the country's photovoltaic sector for the next long term period 2020 ÷ 2030. Because of cuts in FIT’s announced in Germany, Spain, France, UK, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Italy after 2012, the Republic of Uzbekistan represents a stable investment environment in CIS region with clear rules and auction (tender) procedure. Current cumulative installed PV capacity in the country is insignificant, but a number of solar projects will promptly increase in 2020 and next years.
First large scale solar photovoltaic power projects have been announced, whilst the pipeline of over 2,500 MW (2.5 GW) solar project pipeline is progressing in different stages of permitting process. Auction (tender) procedure for solar energy in Uzbekistan is expected to pave the way for fast further growth of the solar PV market in the country. The report provides a complete picture of the market situation, dynamics, current issues and future prospects.
With its abundance of natural gas and oil resources, the energy sector of Uzbekistan is heavily dependent on non-renewable resources. The prevailing part of Uzbekistan's energy mix has thermal power plants (83% run by natural gas, 10% by heavy oil and 7% by coal. Total installed generation capacity is 12.7 GW. Uzbekistan has an ambitious plan to upgrade and increase capacity.
The power sector in Uzbekistan is vertically integrated. The sector is monopolised through the state-owned company Uzbekenergo (in charge of electricity generation, transmission and distribution and heat/thermal energy supply). Uzbekenergo operates under the supervision and regulation of the Cabinet of Ministers and the Ministry of Finance. Uzbekenergo has 54 subsidiary companies responsible for generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. Out of these 54 enterprises, 11 are unitary state enterprises, 41 are open joint-stock companies and two are limited liability companies. This structure has been kept to allow private or public investment in some of the sectors. However, most of the ownership at present is with the government. Currently, Uzbekenergo owns 10 thermal power plants and 28 hydropower plants, which account for almost 97% of the power consumption.
