Türkiye Plans to Install 60 GW of New Solar Photovoltaic and Wind Power Capacity by 2035
/LONDON, September 20, 2024, 14:00 GMT, RENEWABLE MARKET WATCHTM/ Türkiye has announced plans to increase its renewable energy generation capacity with 60 GW of new solar and wind facilities by 2035. New investments of USD 10 billion will be implemented to strengthen the grid network. Up to USD 100 billion will be spent on this new initiative, and the country's cumulative solar and wind capacity will exceed 100 GW by 2035..
The total installed power generation capacity of Türkiye exceeds 110 GW in 2024, and the share of renewables has reached 50%. According to government plans, the total installed capacity will reach 190 GW by 2035. To meet this target, the country is reinforcing its grid infrastructure with a focus on solid interconnectivity to manage the expected substantial increase in renewable capacity. Türkiye is Europe’s biggest solar panel manufacturer and the fourth largest in the world, and it is targeting to enter the global top three by the end of 2024.
Türkiye is one of the fastest-growing energy markets in the world, and its total energy demand is increasing rapidly. In answer to many concerns – climate change, the health effects of air pollution, energy security, and volatile oil prices – the country is looking at developing renewable technologies and solar PV with wind to decarbonise the energy mix.
According to the Energy Market Regulatory Authority’s (EMRA) statistics, Türkiye’s cumulative solar capacity reached 11.7 GW and wind 11.8 GW by the end of 2023. If we assume the 510 MW secondary solar capacity installed in hybrid power plants, the cumulative solar PV capacity in the country exceeds 12.2 GW at the end of 2023.
