The Romanian National Energy Strategy 2025-2035 with an Outlook to 2050 is Adopted
/BUCHAREST, December 2, 2024, 9:30 CET, RENEWABLE MARKET WATCHTM/ The Government of Romania adopted, at the end of November 2024, the long-awaited National Energy Strategy 2025-2035, with an outlook to 2050. The Government has released its most ambitious energy strategy in the past 17 years. This strategy outlines the future direction of the national energy sector, focusing on security, accessibility, and sustainability, while positioning Romania as a regional leader.
It establishes a development model that promotes economic competitiveness, national security, and consumer protection, all while respecting climate targets in alignment with the National Integrated Energy and Climate Change Plan submitted to the European Commission. This strategy represents a strong commitment to building a modern energy sector that can effectively respond to both global and regional challenges.
It is the statement of a nation that refuses to depend on others and aspires to become a leader—not just for itself, but also for the region and a sustainable future. "It is time to transform our resources and intelligence into economic power, safety, and competitiveness. Romania is building a future in which no Romanian will suffer from energy poverty, and no company will have to close its doors due to high energy costs,” said the Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja.
Romania continues to be a European leader in reducing greenhouse gas emissions while balancing security, affordability, and the green transition. The country faces global and regional challenges, including market fluctuations, climate change, and the impacts of the war in Ukraine. The National Energy Strategy offers solutions through investments in modern technologies, strengthening the supply chain, digitization, and innovation.
The document is the result of a year of intensive work by experts from the Ministry of Energy, in collaboration with companies, public institutions, civil society, and members of the Honorary Council for Energy. Unlike previous attempts, this strategy did not involve external consultancy and did not impose additional costs on the public budget.
The National Energy Strategy outlines six clear directions for sector development:
1. Energy security
2. Clean energy
3. Energy efficiency
4. Accessibility and economic competitiveness
5. Efficient markets
6. Innovation and digitization
These objectives are guided by clear principles, including the prioritization of supply security, the development of a circular economy, and the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. By adopting this strategy, Romania is committed to a secure, affordable, and clean energy future. It represents an essential step toward transforming the energy sector into a pillar of economic development and a factor of regional stability.
