On-site renewable electricity and storage can help to bring Europe’s business sector closer to climate neutrality

/8th December 2020, Brussels/ The RE-Source Platform launched today a new report revealing the significant untapped potential and value for corporates in deploying renewable electricity and storage installations on commercial and industrial (C&I) buildings or within their premises.

Europe has the opportunity to move towards more sustainable economic models that achieve climate neutrality and support the competitiveness of European businesses. With the right enabling framework, on-site renewable electricity generation and storage can play a significant role in the energy transition, helping companies to increase their renewable electricity procurement in Europe, and to meet their ambitious emissions reduction targets.

The new report describes innovative on-site business models that companies can benefit from, and provides recommendations to EU and national policymakers to unlock the potential of on-site renewables and storage.

Re Source 2020 7 to 11 December 3

This report is the newest addition to the RE-Source Platform’s Renewable Energy Buyers Toolkit which helps businesses navigate the market with increased confidence. It builds on previous reports including Introduction to Corporate Sourcing of Renewable Electricity in Europe and Risk Mitigation for Corporate Renewable PPAs.

Karol Gobczyński, Head of Climate and Energy at Ingka Group, says: “Collaboration has always been a cornerstone of the IKEA way of working – this is more important now than ever in order to tackle the climate crisis. This report is a great example of collaboration between multiple companies and organizations through RE-Source Platform to share experiences and provide recommendations on how to enable everyday energy consumers to become everyday prosumers. Governments have an opportunity to engage with companies and individuals to play active roles in creating net-zero society, through distributed energy generation.”

Joeri Moons, Sustainable Development Leader at Decathlon, says: “Decathlon is committed to working with others to fight the climate crisis, and has pledged to reach 100% renewable electricity for their global operations by 2026. We are excited to be part of this ground-breaking report that enables corporates to have greater control over their energy futures and makes renewable energy a more realistic possibility for businesses across Europe.”

Hannah Hunt, Impact Director at RE-Source Platform, says: “RE-Source is proud to add an on-site report to its Renewable Energy Buyers Toolkit. This report lays out a clear path to help corporates achieve their climate goals by capitalising on on-site renewable electricity and storage. We must utilise all renewable energy options available to achieve a climate-neutral Europe. With ambition, cooperation, and creativity, we can make Europe a global leader for corporate sourcing, and corporates a key part of Europe’s green future.”

Mercè Labordena, Senior Policy Advisor at SolarPower Europe, says: “As part of RE-Source, I am proud to contribute to the development of this report, which is an important addition to the discussion on corporate renewable energy sourcing in Europe. To achieve an energy system based on 100% renewables by 2050, the opportunity for on-site renewable electricity and storage for corporates must be fully understood and utilised. The business models and policy framework put forward here will enable corporates to take the next step towards embracing renewables as an invaluable and daily part of their operations.”
