The Balkans are in full swing when it comes to solar PV development. Bulgaria is still leading the region in terms of cumulative solar capacity by ending up at 1948 MW by the end of last year. Other markets, like Slovenia (771 MW) and Croatia (208 MW) are ramping up to give the pack leader a run for its money. Even countries that are currently at the lower end of the capacity charts are bustling with ambitions (for a full overview of regional market statistics, review Solarplaza’s latest market infographic). Take Montenegro, for example, which currently boasts just 22 MW of PV capacity, yet boasts a concrete project pipeline of around 1.4 GW. Boosted by favorable government support, tax regulations, and other conditions, we can expect to see some big changes in the Balkan solar landscape over the coming years.

Throughout the region, investors have shown themselves ready to back developers, who are incentivized to tap into the market potential that’s fueled by a combination of growing energy demand, EU membership perspective, and decreasing costs of solar PV. Moreover, businesses are also increasingly turning towards C&I solar, facilitated by an emerging PPA framework. Residential prosumers, too, are increasingly installing their own systems to achieve energy autonomy. Nevertheless, a challenging regulatory framework, lengthy permitting processes, and inadequate grid infrastructure pose challenging complexities.

These opportunities and challenges will be central topics at the Solarplaza Summit Balkans, which focuses on a broad scope of markets, including Bulgaria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Montenegro, and Kosovo. After hosting the first edition in Zagreb, this year’s conference will take place in Sofia, Bulgaria, on the 30th of November. The event will be an industry melting pot where regional and international developers, investors, utilities, policymakers, asset owners, and manufacturers will meet to shape the destiny of solar in the Balkans. The event offers solar experts and pioneers of innovation the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in game-changing solutions and new innovations, forge new business links during facilitated networking breaks, and firmly position themselves in the Balkan solar movement.
