This is a uniquely thorough and detailed market report, which offers an incisive and reliable overview of the battery energy storage system (BESS) market of Western Balkan countries for the next long-term period of 2025 ÷ 2034. Since 2021, a fast-growing number of solar photovoltaic and other renewable energy source (RES) power plants have joined the electricity network of Western Balkan countries, and their capacity utilisation varies depending on weather conditions. Therefore, the need for energy storage capacity to balance the injection of the generated energy into the DSOs and TSOs grid has become pressing. BESS projects are critical to the energy mix as they provide security and stability to the European future electricity grid. At the same time, more renewables are a substitute for traditional power plants.
According to the study conducted between September and November 2024 by the Renewable Market Watch™ of 178 key decision-makers of European investment companies active in the renewable energy sector, more renewable energy developers intend to co-locate their projects with BESS. Some 61 per cent (up from 52 per cent in 2023) of the interviewed managers plan to prioritise integrating BESS in their renewable energy projects planned for realisation between 2025 and 2028.
The number of fully permitted and ready-to-build projects is promptly increasing. Co-location with renewables will be a growing application for utility-scale BESS storage. By the end of 2024, more than five Western Balkan countries countries had auctions for co-located projects, and more countries are planning to join this support mechanism in the near future.
Battery long-term performance and storage duration capacity have been improving. Currently, 2-hour duration BESS projects are the most frequent installations, and 4-hour duration will be the most preferred option in Western Balkan countries between 2027 and 2030.
The capacity of newly installed battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Western Balkan countries will exceed 5.2 GWh by 2028. In many countries, the BESS market is underdeveloped and forecasted to score significant growth shortly. The report is focused on electrochemical battery storage technologies (lithium, flow and non-lithium batteries) and provides a complete picture of the market situation, dynamics, risks, current issues and prospects. You will find more than 230 pages of valuable information in this unique, in-depth analysis of the Western Balkan countries battery energy storage system (BESS) market and will receive an overview of how the military conflict in Ukraine and the European Union's efforts to achieve a significant reduction of Russian gas and other energy commodities import will impact it.
With comprehensive market data, this report brings clear and concise insights to help investors, manufacturers and service providers in their decision-making process. As 2023 and 2024 were challenging years for the battery energy storage system (BESS) industry, the time for making the right decisions during 2025 and the next few years is limited. A fast-changing market environment requires relevant and accurate information. For your convenience, we offer the opportunity for orders with customized report content.
