Solar energy’s rapid growth in Poland is evident – even casual observers will note the construction of solar photovoltaics (PV) power plants across the country. Poland is a promising emerging market for photovoltaic energy investments among Central East European (CEE) countries. After several inadequate changes in Poland’s renewable energy laws between 2011 and 2015, the market has finally started to move forward since 2016. Cumulative solar PV capacity in the country is quickly growing in the last two years under the renewable energy sources (RES) auction model and the net metering support scheme established by the Polish government.
According to the Polish Academy of Science, the average sunshine duration in Poland is 1,600 hours per year and the average solar irradiation on a horizontal surface is approximately 1,080 kWh/m2. According to the Polish Energy Policy 2050, cumulative installed solar PV capacity will rise to 15.83 GW by 2050. Mandatory targets of the Directive 2009/28/EC on the Promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources set by the European Union (EU) for Poland are set to 15 % by 2020.
Solar PV power in Poland can supply a significant amount of electricity that is both environmentally and economically attractive. Renewable Market WatchTM estimates that cumulative installed solar PV capacity in Poland may exceed 1.37 GW by the end of 2020, thanks to the government support, rapidly-falling solar power costs, and a growing role for batteries, including electric vehicle batteries, in balancing electricity supply and demand. Investments in solar photovoltaic (PV) projects under the auctions for energy from renewable energy sources (RES) shall have a prevailing part of the Polish solar PV market.
