Iberdrola España, part of the Iberdrola Group, commissioned Spain’s first two large-scale battery storage systems in Alarcón (Cuenca). Each Romeral and Olmedilla battery has 60 MWh of storage and about 30 MW of power output, enough to supply over 13,000 homes for two hours.
The battery construction created over 100 jobs and involved many national suppliers. The project shows how renewable energy boosts skilled jobs and industry in Spain. Battery storage maximises the use of clean energy and improves the quality of the electricity supply. It helps stabilise networks and allows more renewable integration.
Romeral and Olmedilla are part of six BESS with a total power output of 173 MW. The IDAE named this a Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE), granting €37.5 million in funding. Iberdrola supports efficient energy storage to drive electrification and decarbonisation. The company invests in large pumped hydro and small BESS solutions.
Iberdrola España prioritises efficient energy storage for electrification, decarbonisation, and the energy transition, focusing on large pumped-storage and small-scale BESS. The company leads in energy storage by hydroelectric generation and pumped storage, with 4.5 GW installed. Its main pumped-storage plants in Iberia include La Muela, Villarino, Tâmega, and Santiago-Sil-Xares.
Iberdrola España has pioneered lithium-ion battery storage. In 2021, it installed Spain’s first battery hybridised with photovoltaic technology at Campo Arañuelo III (Extremadura).
The company operates a 20 MWh battery in Puertollano to store solar energy for green hydrogen production at the largest industrial plant of its kind in Europe, as well as two batteries in the Basque Country. The one in Abadiño (Biscay) connects to the Oiz wind farm’s evacuation line and to the network independently. The other in Álava stores wind power from the Elgea-Urkilla wind farm.
