Iberdrola Renewables Polska, a subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group, has secured €44 million (PLN 186 million) from the Polish National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management to build three battery energy storage systems (BESS) with a total capacity of 160 megawatts (MW). These projects will enhance grid stability, facilitate the integration of renewable energy, and support Poland’s transition to cleaner energy. The funding covers the Pniewnik 1 (38 MW) and Pniewnik 2 (42 MW) BESS facilities in Mazovia, and the Zushi BESS project (80 MW) in Lower Silesia.
These systems capture surplus electricity as chemical energy when demand is low, then release it back to the grid during peak hours or whenever renewable sources fall short.
Iberdrola is advancing energy storage in Poland, supporting electrification and the country’s sustainability goals. Its growing portfolio now spans twelve BESS projects across the country, totalling 940 MW.
