Ignitis Group, an integrated utility focused on renewable energy, is expected to start construction of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Lithuania soon. The company will implement these BESS plants in the areas around Kelmė, Mažeikiai, and Kruonis. With a combined capacity of 291 MW and 582 MWh of storage, these projects are among the first utility-scale BESS initiatives in the country. This technology enables the storage of surplus electricity, which can be supplied back to the grid during periods of peak demand, helping to balance the energy system and ensure a reliable electricity supply. The total investment in these BESS plants is valued at approximately EUR 130 million.
Ignitis Group will deploy BESS plants at three locations: Kelmė and Mažeikiai wind farms, operated by the international green energy company Ignitis Renewables, and the Kruonis Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Plant, operated by Ignitis Gamyba.
Typically, after assessing system requirements and technical capabilities, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are installed near operating power plants. This proximity helps manage local system loads more efficiently. BESS will facilitate the integration of additional renewable energy sources and enhance network resilience, ultimately making the entire system more reliable. Furthermore, they will contribute to national energy objectives and strengthen regional energy infrastructure.
The construction of all Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects of Ignitis Group is expected to begin this year, with commercial operations planned to start in 2027. The German company Rolls-Royce Solutions GmbH will supply the equipment and integration services for all three BESS projects. Furthermore, the information and generation control systems of the BESS will be safeguarded against remote access from countries identified as threats according to Lithuania’s National Security Strategy.
In the second quarter of 2025, electricity generation in Lithuania from local sources increased by 50%. Over 90% of the country’s electricity needs were met by domestic production, with nearly 75% coming from renewable sources.
Compared to the same time last year:
- Wind power grew by 59%.
- Solar energy grew by 43%.
- Total electricity from renewables reached 1.9 TWh, up 42%.
