The largest energy producer in Southeastern Europe, OMV Petrom, acquires 50% of the photovoltaic project in Gabare near Byala Slatina, Bulgaria. The project is implemented through a partnership with the Enery and includes investments of approximately EUR 200 million until 2027. A potential battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of up to 600 MWh is planned to be co-located at this solar project.
With an installed capacity of approximately 400 MW, the solar power plant is among the largest in Bulgaria. It is expected to supply the electricity needs of 150,000 homes once it is operational. OMV Petrоm enters as a partner in Dunаv Sоlаr Рlаnt Ltd, which is developing the power plant, and will acquire half of the power generated through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). The construction permit has already been secured, and the final investment decision is expected by the end of 2025.
Frank Neil from the management of OMV Petrom stresses that this deal is part of the company’s strategy to expand into neighbouring markets and move towards low-carbon sources. “We believe that natural gas and renewable energy can go hand in hand,” he states.
According to Enery’s Executive Director Richard Koenig, the partnership with OMV Restrom not only ensures scale and predictability for the project but also sets the standard for how the industry can drive the green energy transformation in the region.
