Premier Energy Group, a Bucharest Stock Exchange-listed utility with major ownership by EMMA Holding (controlled by Czech billionaire Jiri Smejc), has announced the acquisition of a ready-to-build battery energy storage system (BESS) project near Iaşi, Romania. The project features a planned charging and discharging capacity of 200 MW and a total storage capacity of 400 MWh, positioning it among the largest battery storage developments in Southeast Europe.
This strategic transaction marks a significant milestone for Premier Energy, signalling its entry into large-scale storage solutions as part of its broader energy platform expansion in Romania. The new facility is designed as an autonomous, utility-scale battery storage plant, with construction anticipated to take place primarily during 2026 and commissioning targeted for late 2026 or early 2027.
According to Premier Energy Group CEO José Garza, battery storage is emerging as a cornerstone of modern power systems, particularly in markets with rising shares of variable renewable energy and increasing balancing requirements. The Iaşi project is expected to reduce intraday price volatility, enhance grid stability, and provide additional flexibility to support both renewable generation and supply operations across the Group’s Romanian portfolio.
The BESS installation will help balance Romania’s energy system by storing excess electricity when renewable production is high and supplying it during periods of peak demand or low generation. This is especially relevant given Romania’s dynamic power market, characterized by significant price fluctuations at 15-minute intervals and a rapidly growing number of prosumers. The project is expected to drive down system costs and facilitate the efficient integration of renewables.
The role of battery energy storage systems is increasingly pivotal in advancing the energy transition, offering rapid response times for grid balancing, mitigating renewable intermittency, and reducing dependence on fossil-fuel-based balancing resources. As a result, BESS assets are recognized as key contributors to the resilience and flexibility of the national energy system.
Peter Stohr, CFO of Premier Energy Group, emphasized the operational and strategic synergies expected from the project, highlighting ongoing discussions with a leading Central and Eastern European financial institution to secure project financing. The estimated development and construction cost is approximately €75 million, with the Group seeking a long-term capital structure that aligns with its investment strategy and future growth ambitions.
Premier Energy’s shares (PE) have gained 16.11% year-to-date, reflecting increased investor confidence and bringing the company’s market capitalization to RON 2.84 billion.
