By the end of 2024, Bulgaria had a cumulative installed solar capacity of 4,568 MW (4.57 GW), representing an increase of 1,283 MW (1.28 GW) compared to 2023. The rapid growth of solar PV capacity in Bulgaria necessitates a corresponding increase in battery storage to prevent grid imbalance issues. The battery energy storage system (BESS) market in Bulgaria is expected to experience robust growth by 2030 in the co-located/behind-the-meter (BTM) and front-of-the-meter (FTM) segments.
Recently, contracts have been signed for a total of 6,000 MWh of installed battery capacity as part of the initiative aimed at developing a comprehensive national infrastructure for storing energy derived from renewable sources, known as the RESTORE program. In addition to the battery energy storage system (BESS) projects approved for funding after the latest tender (RESTORE), another 1,900 MWh of electricity storage systems will be added in the second part of the program in Bulgaria (RESTORE 2), and the total amount of grant funding they will receive is over BGN 230 million (EUR 117.6 million). Under the newly discussed procedure, BESS facilities need to be built, installed, connected to either the electricity transmission or distribution network, and put into operation by July 31, 2026.
Several large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) projects and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects with a capacity exceeding 50 MW have been announced in Bulgaria since 2023, and these projects are scheduled to be built between 2025 and 2028.
