The Albanian Energy Regulatory Authority’s (ERE) data show that in the first eight months of this year, Albania added two solar photovoltaic power plants totaling 150 MW and a hydropower plant totaling 48.9 MW to its transmission grid.
The country hosts Karavasta, the region’s largest photovoltaic park, with a peak capacity of 140 MW. Its operator, Voltalia, headquartered in France, is building Spitalla, a 100 MW facility. It won both projects at Albania’s renewable energy auctions.
Since last year, there has been more electricity generation capacity in private ownership in Albania than in the system under state-controlled utility KESH. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Belinda Balluku said today that solar power reached 10% of capacity.
Five utility-scale solar photovoltaic parks with a combined installed capacity of 156 MW were commissioned in Albania in 2025. The largest of these, Sunny Side Solar (100 MW), was developed by the domestic conglomerate Kastrati Group, which has a diversified portfolio spanning construction and oil. The facility is strategically located in the Fier region of western Albania, reflecting Albania’s growing interest in renewable energy investment.
Additionally, the 50 MW Spv Blue 2 solar power plant, a joint venture between Blessed Investment and Matrix Konstruksion, was brought online in Sheq Marinas, Fier. Notably, the same partnership previously delivered the Blue 1 PV park, recognized as Albania’s first fully privately financed solar project, which reached commissioning last year in the same locality.
Both Sunny Side Solar and Blue 2 commenced commercial operations in August 2025, alongside one of three smaller new units, each with a capacity of 2 MW. The remaining two units were connected to the grid in April and June, underscoring the acceleration of solar PV deployment in the Albanian market.
In other recent news, CWP Europe recently signed a joint declaration with the European Commission and the Albanian Investment Development Agency in support of its Tropoja wind farm project.
