The adoption of long-term targets and supporting policy measures has resulted in strong growth in renewable energy deployment across the region, from a 9% share in gross final energy consumption in 2005 to 16.7% in 2015.

The solar photovoltaic (PV) technology has the largest stake compared to other renewable energy technologies in Italy. Reasons behind the domination of solar PV energy in Italy are favourable geographic location of the country and Italian government support system Conto Energia for solar PV projects, which started in 2005 as a strategy to meet renewable energy targets set out in the EU Directive 2001/77/EC (European Parliament and Council of European Union 2001).

/21st December 2017, VESTAS/ Following the success of Vestas and OOO Fortum Energy in Russia’s first wind energy auction, the two companies have signed the first order of a binding framework agreement. The framework agreement engages Vestas to supply its 4 MW platform for wind energy projects in the world’s fourth largest electricity market, while the order includes 14 V126-3.6 MW turbines for a 50 MW project at an undisclosed site. /28th November 2017, RENEWABLE MARKET WATCHTM/ In 2016, the Russian Federation, together with 118 countries, all in all, responsible for 75 per cent of global emissions, signed the Paris Agreement. This outcome of the UN Climate Change Conference COP21 in Paris was adopted by consensus on 12 December 2015. The Russian Federation is one of the world’s largest emitters and fossil fuels producers. Consequently, it has a large mitigation potential and could play a major role in international climate policy.

/2nd October 2017, RENEWABLE MARKET WATCHTM/ Statkraft officially opened the 73MW Banja hydropower project in Albania, which is the first of the two power plants being constructed as part of the 256MW Devoll hydropower project. The power plant, which is located 65 kilometres southeast of the capital Tirana, was officially opened by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama and Statkraft CEO Christian Rynning-Tønnesen, together with Albanian Energy Minister Damian Gjiknuri and Norway’s Ambassador-designate, Per Sjaastad.

/14th September 2017, RENEWABLE MARKET WATCHTM, UNDP) According to RENEWABLE MARKET WATCHTM, Belarus plans to increase its wind power capacity to 500 MW by 2030 from an insignificant level of cumulative installed capacity at present. This information is based on recent UNDP-GEF project “Removing Barriers to Wind Power Development in Belarus” in cooperation with United Nations Development Project and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus produced a report on de-risking renewable energy investment.

/25th August 2017, Axel Reiserer/ The EBRD and the Enterprise Expansion Fund (ENEF) are jointly providing €1.8 million in financing to support the expansion of Albanian company APM, a leading local manufacturer of fabricated metal products, which is active in the renewable energy business as well. The funds will co-finance a €3.7 million investment plan including the purchase of machinery and equipment to support the expansion of capacity in response to growing demand from existing and new clients.

/24th July 2017, RENEWABLE MARKET WATCHTM/, Ministry of Energy Infrastructure and Natural Resources of Armenia announced last week that 10 companies have been pre-qualified for a tender about 55 MW solar PV power plant located in the Masrik region of Gegharkunik province. The project cost is estimated to be between $40 to $60 million. The tender is being conducted by the Armenia Renewable Resources and Energy Efficiency Fund.
