/NOVA PAKA, CZECH REPUBLIC, May 14, 2026, 15:33 CET, České Noviny – ČTK/ A battery energy storage system (BESS) facility is on fire in Nová Paka, a town of 9,000 people in the Jičín region, Czech Republic, according to information from the Czech News Agency (České Noviny – ČTK). Firefighters are responding to the scene and are recommending that people not ventilate due to the spread of toxic fumes.
Experts are measuring air concentrations, according to information from the firefighters on the social network X. The key information on this fire could be summarised as follows:
1) Batteries are burning in a battery energy storage system (BESS) facility with dimensions of approximately 4 by 10 meters.
2) No one was injured.
3) The fire was reported at 1:16 p.m.
4) The fire is burning in the premises of a company, almost in the middle of the city, with residential buildings nearby.
5) Four fire brigade units are responding to the scene. “The scene is closed. Toxic combustion products are spreading, and it is recommended not to ventilate,” the firefighters said.
According to information provided to ČTK by Zuzana Strouhalová, a spokeswoman for the regional firefighters, the measurements are being carried out by experts from the Institute for Population Protection from Lázně Bohdanče. “It’s a difficult intervention; the measurements will take some time.”.
Firefighters also used the Cobra (Cold Cut System), a high-pressure firefighting and cutting device used to extinguish the fire from the outside. “We used the Cobra system to cool the battery cells through the container shell,” the firefighters said.
