Largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Plant in Europe Coalburn 1 in Scotland Starts Commercial Operation

/LONDON, August 13, 2026, 10:30 BST, RENEWABLE MARKET WATCH™/ Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), via its flagship Copenhagen Infrastructure IV (CI IV) fund, has launched commercial operations at Coalburn 1—a market-defining battery energy storage system (BESS) setting new industry standards for size and impact in Europe. With a capacity of 500 MW/1,000 MWh (two-hour duration), Coalburn 1 is the largest operational battery facility on the continent, establishing a new benchmark for grid-scale flexibility and storage innovation.

This milestone demonstrates CIP’s ability to deliver transformative energy assets that directly support the UK’s clean energy transition and grid modernisation agenda. Strategically located in South Lanarkshire, Coalburn 1 leverages advanced lithium-ion battery technology to deliver rapid-response storage, grid balancing, and enhanced system flexibility. Designed to address the demands of a modern, renewables-driven power network, the facility enables seamless integration of intermittent renewable generation, improves grid reliability, and supports cost-effective decarbonization for the UK electricity market.

Coalburn 1 anchors CIP’s fast-growing UK energy infrastructure portfolio as one of three large-scale, transmission-connected BESS projects in Scotland. Collectively, Coalburn 1, Coalburn 2, and Devilla will deliver 1.5 GW of flexible power capacity and 3 GWh of energy storage, substantially enhancing security of electricity supply, grid resilience, and the UK’s ability to scale renewable energy deployment. This coordinated approach strengthens CIP’s leadership in the energy storage sector and underscores its commitment to supporting the UK’s ambitions for a low-carbon, future-proof power system.

Nischal Agarwal, Partner at CIP, said: “The successful delivery of Coalburn 1 marks an important milestone for CIP and our growing European BESS portfolio. As Europe’s largest operational battery energy storage system, Coalburn 1 will enhance the flexibility and resilience of the UK electricity system, support the integration of more renewable power, and contribute to lowering costs for consumers. Alongside Coalburn 2 and Devilla, this project demonstrates CIP’s industrial capabilities in developing, commercialising and delivering energy infrastructure at scale.”
