Matrix Renewables Signed a GBP 245 Million Non-recourse Project Financing for a 500MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Plant in Scotland

/LONDON, May 1, 2026, 9:15 BST, RENEWABLE MARKET WATCH™/ Matrix Renewables, the global renewable energy platform backed by TPG Rise, has secured a £245 million non-recourse project financing to enable the construction of a landmark 500MW/1,000MWh transmission-connected Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Eccles–Leitholm, southern Scotland. This significant capital injection underpins Matrix’s strategy to deliver large-scale, technologically advanced energy infrastructure in line with the UK’s energy transition goals.

The transaction was executed as an underwritten deal, jointly arranged by CIBC’s London Branch, MUFG Bank, Ltd., and NatWest, with NatWest serving as Facility Agent. The involvement of these leading global financial institutions underscores the robust market confidence in both Matrix’s operational expertise and the long-term growth prospects of the UK’s energy storage sector.

“This £245 million financing underwritten by CIBC, MUFG, and NatWest reflects the strong and growing demand for high-quality battery storage assets and reinforces the strength of our UK platform,” said Nicolás Navas, CFO of Matrix Renewables. “We are grateful for the continued support and partnership of our banking partners in bringing this project to a successful financial close,” he added.

Strategically sited along critical transmission corridors linking Scotland and England, the Eccles BESS project will be instrumental in advancing grid flexibility, strengthening energy security, and accelerating the integration of renewable power into the UK electricity system. Construction began in November 2025, with commercial operations targeted for the third quarter of 2027 through a strategic partnership with EDF. The project is expected to generate significant local employment opportunities and catalyse economic development during both construction and operational phases.

Upon completion, the Eccles BESS will deliver essential grid flexibility services, supporting the annual electricity needs of approximately 270,000 households and mitigating an estimated 170,000 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions each year. This aligns directly with the UK’s ambitious decarbonisation targets and reinforces Matrix’s role as a key enabler of national sustainability objectives.

Matrix Renewables has proactively engaged with local authorities and environmental stakeholders to ensure the project adheres to stringent environmental, technical, and community standards, achieving responsible integration into the local landscape. A collaboration agreement with the Leitholm, Eccles, and Birgham Community Council further demonstrates Matrix’s commitment to fostering positive social impact through targeted community initiatives. This transaction marks a pivotal milestone for both the Eccles BESS project and Matrix Renewables’ broader UK growth strategy, underpinning the company’s nationwide pipeline of storage and renewable energy developments.

Matrix Renewables was represented by A&O Shearman (London) as legal counsel. The lender syndicate received legal advice from Watson Farley & Williams (London), with Enertis engaged as technical advisor and Aurora as market advisor, ensuring robust due diligence and transaction execution.
