Sunterra RE Included an Additional 1.3 GWh of BESS for Three of Its Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power Plants in Bulgaria

/SOFIA, BULGARIA, June 5, 2026, 10:15 CEST, RENEWABLE MARKET WATCH™/ Sunterra RE, a leading Bulgarian renewable energy company, has successfully completed the second phase of its large-scale initiative to integrate advanced battery energy storage systems (BESS) at three of its solar photovoltaic power plants.

With this expansion, the company has increased its total installed storage capacity to approximately 397 MW/1.3 GWh, significantly enhancing the operational capabilities and energy management potential across its portfolio. The strategically located facilities in Galabovo, Kaloyanovo, and Karlovo are equipped with state-of-the-art lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology, enabling up to four hours of high-efficiency energy storage at nearly 90% round-trip efficiency. Each site is engineered for a 25-year operational lifespan, ensuring long-term asset reliability and return on investment. Detailed specifications for each installation are outlined below.

  • Galabovo: 150 MW / 450 MWh
  • Kaloyanovo: 150 MW / 506 MWh
  • Karlovo: 97 MW / 320 MWh

Commissioning of these BESS sites followed the receipt of all necessary operating permits from relevant regulatory authorities, confirming that each facility fully complies with stringent technical, regulatory, and safety standards required for commercial operation. These projects were entirely self-financed by Sunterra RE, aligning with the company’s strategic vision to expand its footprint in energy storage infrastructure. By enabling the storage and dispatch of generated solar energy during periods of peak demand, these BESS installations significantly contribute to grid stability, operational flexibility, and the overall efficiency of Bulgaria’s electricity system.
