/BELGRADE, SERBIA, September 4, 2026, 10:00 CEST, RENEWABLE MARKET WATCH™/ Serbia has achieved a major milestone in its grid modernisation journey, with over 900,000 customers now equipped with advanced smart meters. This large-scale deployment, led by Elektrodistribucija Srbije (EDS) and underpinned by strategic investments from the European Union (EU) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), positions Serbia as a regional leader in digital energy infrastructure.
To highlight the project’s progress and strategic impact, a joint delegation from the EU and EBRD—including EU Ambassador Andreas von Beckerat and EBRD representative Francesco Corbo—visited Niš, one of Serbia’s flagship cities for smart grid innovation, to assess implementation and review the tangible benefits delivered to both households and the national power system.
This smart metering initiative marks a transformative step in the digitalisation and modernisation of Serbia’s electricity distribution network. By delivering enhanced service quality, greater billing accuracy, and real-time data for advanced network management, the program strengthens grid reliability and accelerates the country’s green energy transition. The rollout began with a €110 million EU grant, followed by an EBRD loan, and is set to expand further with additional financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB) for 400,000 more meters. During their visit to Niš, EU and EBRD officials also toured a residential building outfitted with 40 new smart meters, underscoring the project’s reach and practical impact at the community level.
“For citizens of Serbia, the benefits are simple and practical: more accurate bills, easier access to consumption information and better control of household energy costs. And that is important, because Serbia’s energy system is entering a new phase: rooftop solar power plants, heat pumps, electric vehicles, and local energy communities will increasingly change the way electricity is produced, measured, and consumed”, Andreas von Beckerat, Ambassador of the European Union to Serbia, pointed out.
“The modernisation of the distribution network is key to Serbia’s transition to a more efficient, resilient and low-carbon energy system. Through our contribution to EDS for the introduction of smart meters, we are strengthening the reliability and efficiency of the network, which at the same time enables greater integration of renewable energy sources and more active participation of consumers”, said Francesco Corbo from the EBRD.
“We are actively working on digitalisation and the introduction of the most modern technologies in the electricity distribution system, and this is one of the projects that bring savings and benefits to both users and the company. So far, about 200 million euros have been invested in installing smart meters in Serbia, and today almost every fourth meter is read remotely. Our strategic decision is that every new connection has a smart meter. For EDS, this means better insight into the state of the network and more efficient management, while users can monitor their own consumption and use energy more efficiently. In the fall, a portal will launch that will give all smart-meter users continuous insight into their consumption”, said Biljana Komnenić, Acting Director of EDS.
