Largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the European Union was Commissioned in Bulgaria

/SOFIA, BULGARIA, May 22, 2025, 11:00 CET, RENEWABLE MARKET WATCH™/ Bulgaria is now home to the largest electricity storage facility in the European Union. This facility, constructed by Advance Green Energy AD in Lovech, has an installed capacity of 124.1 MW and can store up to 496.4 MWh of energy. This development marks a significant milestone in enhancing the country’s energy infrastructure.

The ceremony held on May 22 in the city was attended by several notable figures, including Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov, Lovech Mayor Stracimir Petkov, project investors Kiril and Georgi Domuschiev, as well as Members of Parliament Delyan Dobrev (GERB) and Stanislav Atanasov (DPS-New Beginnings). Additionally, ESO CEO Angel Tsachev and Ralitsa Marinova, Chief Architect of Lovech Municipality, were present.

The project consists of 16 modules, each with a capacity of 7.8 MW and 31.03 MWh. These modules are equipped with 111 lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, which are among the most reliable technologies available in the energy storage market. Each module can charge and discharge within a 4-hour period.

This system represents both a technological advancement and a strategic tool for balancing the power grid. Storing affordable green energy and releasing it during peak demand periods directly contributes to grid stability and price predictability—two essential factors for industry and the transition to a sustainable economy.

The storage system is part of the largest hybrid fleet in the EU, including a 106 MW photovoltaic plant. It is connected to Bulgaria’s first and only licensed closed distribution network located at the ‘Industrial Park Balkan’ in Lovech, Bulgaria. The total investment in the project is EUR 75 million (BGN 146.7 million), which includes funds raised from a loan of BGN 89 million from City Bank and nearly EUR 45/5 million (BGN 58 million) in financial assistance from the Recovery and Sustainability Plan under the RESTORE measure.

The 124.1 MW/496.4 MWh BESS system was installed in under six months, making it one of the fastest-implemented facilities of its scale in the region. This installation includes inverters, transformer stations, a cabling system, and an intelligent control system, all of which support the efficient and safe operation of the complex.
