/BUCHAREST, ROMANIA, December 12, 2025, 10:30 CET, RENEWABLE MARKET WATCH™/ The Ministry of Energy is pleased to announce the commissioning of the largest battery energy storage facility in Romania, developed by Nova Power & Gas in Cluj County. This state-of-the-art facility aims to enhance the stability and reliability of the national energy grid by storing excess energy generated from renewable sources and providing it during peak demand periods.
In addition to this significant development, the Ministry also highlights the commencement of construction of a 160 MW combined-cycle gas-fired power plant in Câmpia Turzii. This plant will utilise advanced technology to improve efficiency and reduce emissions compared to traditional power generation methods. Collectively, these projects represent a robust investment of over 350 million euros, underscoring a commitment to expanding Romania’s energy infrastructure and transitioning to more sustainable energy solutions. The Ministry of Energy announces the successful commissioning of Romania’s largest battery energy storage facility, developed by Nova Power & Gas in Cluj County. Additionally, work has begun on a 160 MW combined-cycle gas-fired power plant in Câmpia Turzii. These projects represent significant investments, totalling over 350 million euros.
Statement by the Minister of Energy, Bogdan Ivan: “Any investment that brings direct benefits to people, either through more stable prices or through increased energy security, is an investment that the Ministry of Energy supports. Battery storage and new production capacities are exactly the type of projects that Romania needs to modernise its energy system and safely integrate more and more renewable sources. I was in Florești today to see this major investment on site and to send a firm message: Romania needs responsible private capital, fair competition and projects that deliver real results for consumers. The Ministry of Energy will continue to create the necessary framework for such investments, respecting the state’s roles and institutional limits, while remaining an open partner to all who build value in Romania. I congratulate Nova Power & Gas on taking on these projects and on its investment direction focused on modern technologies, flexibility, and solutions that deliver direct benefits to the energy system and consumers. ”
Nova Power & Gas is a privately held company operating in a dynamic, competitive energy market. The Ministry of Energy actively encourages the company to pursue various forms of investment, whether from public or private sources. Such investments are critical as they not only generate value for consumers by potentially lowering costs and improving service quality but also play a vital role in supporting the stability and balancing of the National Energy System. Moreover, these investments contribute significantly to modernising and enhancing energy infrastructure, ensuring it meets current demands and is prepared for future challenges. Through these efforts, Nova Power & Gas aims to foster innovation and sustainability within the energy sector.
The Florești facility, which boasts an impressive installed capacity of 200 megawatts (MW) and a significant energy storage capability of 400 megawatt-hours (MWh), marks a crucial advancement in enhancing the flexibility and reliability of the National Power System. This development comes at a time when energy storage solutions are increasingly critical for seamlessly integrating electricity generated from renewable sources into the grid. The ability to store energy not only helps manage fluctuations in renewable energy production but also optimises overall system performance.
The Ministry of Energy has reiterated its commitment to fostering competitive investments to bolster energy security in Romania. By promoting investments that not only strengthen the national economy but also advance the country’s energy transition goals, the Ministry is taking proactive steps to ensure that Romania is well-positioned for a sustainable energy future. Through these efforts, the Ministry aims to support initiatives aligned with both national priorities and the broader global movement toward greener energy solutions.
