/SOFIA, BULGARIA, November 14, 2025, 9:00 CEST, RENEWABLE MARKET WATCH™/ GEN-I has entered into an agreement to manage two significant storage facilities currently under construction by SUNOTEC in Bulgaria as part of its investment strategy. The first facility will have a capacity of 150 MW along with a storage capacity of 379 MWh, while the second will offer a capacity of 50 MW and a storage capacity of 126 MWh.
Both facilities are expected to begin full commercial operations by the end of March 2026. Notably, there are currently no comparable large battery energy storage systems (BHEEs) in Slovenia, and this collaboration highlights the GEN-I Group’s strong presence in international markets. At GEN-I, based on many years of international experience, they provide their business partners with advanced, analytics-supported management solutions, access to international markets, and market optimisation of operations through dynamic response to market conditions.
Based on the signed contracts, GEN-I will act as the exclusive market performance optimiser and trading partner for both battery systems. The company will manage the charging and discharging cycles of the batteries and ensure their inclusion in intraday wholesale markets, day-ahead markets, and within mechanisms of system services. GEN-I’s role will include real-time energy scheduling, market optimisation, and revenue management with algorithmic support 24/7. The collaboration is based on a long-term revenue-sharing model, combining the interests of both parties – SUNOTEC as the owner of BESS plants and GEN-I as the optimisation partner – with a clear aim of maximising market value while maintaining stable operation and full regulatory compliance.
“This partnership represents an important milestone for both GEN-I and SUNOTEC. Together, we are managing battery storage projects with a total capacity of approximately 200 MW. For GEN-I, this is the first collaboration of this scale and an important step in expanding our portfolio of energy storage facilities, which we manage as a market optimiser. With its in-depth knowledge of energy trading across the wider European region, advanced optimisation, and algorithmic management, GEN-I ensures that battery systems operate more intelligently — transforming flexibility into real market value. By rapidly expanding our portfolio, we contribute to a more efficient, flexible, and sustainable energy system for the entire region,” emphasised Dr Igor Koprivnikar, MBA, a member of the management board of GEN-I, doo, upon signing the contract.
The partnership between SUNOTEC and GEN-I combines SUNOTEC’s engineering and construction expertise with GEN-I’s advanced skills in energy trading, flexibility, and market optimisation. This alliance aims to leverage synergies across the entire lifecycle of battery systems, including development, construction, operational management, and market optimisation. The goal is to enhance value for investors and support the development of a resilient energy system in South-Eastern Europe.
Recognised as the best energy and electricity trader in Europe in the prestigious Global Energy Risk Commodity Rankings 2025, GEN-I operates in 26 countries with a diversified trading infrastructure that integrates global market access with in-depth regional knowledge. Their advanced optimisation models, continuous (24/7) trading, and integrated risk and operational management processes enable the realisation of GEN-I’s strategic vision as a leading operator in the region.
